Link Building
These days, it is difficult to get good search engine positioning without at least a handful of quality inbound links. The major search engines have programmed their algorithms to detect the number and quality of links pointed at your site. The idea is that a website with many links from reputable sites is probably more valuable than a website with fewer, or lower quality inbound links.

These online hyperlink references are similar to real-world word-of-mouth referrals. For example: If all of your closest friends referred you to the same babysitter, you'd be more likely to take a chance with that person than anyone else. There might be another babysitter, equally good, just down the street, but you are less likely to find and trust that person without a referral from your friends.

Similarly, if many reputable websites link to yours, it "tells" a search engine that your site is worth visiting - which means it merits the best positioning that your on-the-page SEO tactics can earn it. In this way, link building works hand in hand with search engine optimization for positioning.

Typically, the work I do includes search engine submissions. These listings certainly can be counted as "quality inbound links." Unless you're operating in a competitor-free zone, though, it makes sense to build on this. Not only will those links refer traffic to your site, they will also help improve your positioning in search engines.

I can provide written guidelines that you can use to handle this in-house. It may be tempting to simply launch into a link building campaign without them, but search engines have become more adept at detecting and punishing sites that engage in spammy link building practices. Unfortunately, some of those tactics could be mistaken by a beginner as legitimate forms of link building.

By describing best practices for link building, telling you what to avoid, explaining how to launch your campaign, and how to manage it on an ongoing basis, my guidelines will steer you around these pitfalls. In this way, you can cost-effectively build links that send traffic to your site - directly, and by boosting your positioning in search engines.
