August, 2004 8/9/04: Google protects its primary source of revenue, AdWords, by agreeing to exchange 2.7 million shares of stock for a license to YahoOverture's pay-per-click patent. This settlement may discourage other engines from entering the pay-per-click arena (and staying there). Stay tuned for April, 2005 when YahoOverture mounts the same battle against Findwhat. 8/3/04: Yahoo releases beta Local Search, derived from InfoUSA and Yahoo Yellow Pages, to compete with Google and AskJeeves' movement into the local advertising arena.
