Search Engine Reports

October, 2004
10/29/04: Google invites Froogle merchants to use new Ad Automator, which uses a direct feed to specify Adwords copy and keywords. Word on the street suggests that this is too automated for its own good; copy writing and conversion rates suffer from automation.

10/28/04: Google breaks new ground by licensing Adwords to BellSouth for resale on RealPages.

10/27/04: Google acquires Keyhole, a satellite image firm whose web-based software, EarthViewer, allows the user a virtual window on the world. This is expected to eventually be integrated with search.

10/26/04: Yahoo partners with Adobe to integrate Yahoo Search into Adobe Acrobat.

10/25/04: Yahoo announces acquisition of Stata Labs and its email search software, Bloomba.

10/21/04: AOL Europe drops Overture sponsored listings in favor of Google Adwords.

10/14/04: Google releases Desktop Search. Windows users now have the power of Google to search their Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files; Outlook email messages; AOL instant messages; web pages, text files, and the names, if not the content, of image files and PDFs.

10/7/04: Google releases beta Google Print, a massive scanning project which helps the user find and purchase books by presenting three scanned pages - the one containing the user's search term, as well as the page before and the page after - along with a link to an online bookstore or library with the item in stock. Perhaps predictably, Adwords appear with search results.

10/5/04: Yahoo releases beta Personal Web Search. Like AskJeeves' Personal Web, it allows a registered user to save and organize the results of a search for future reference from any Internet-enabled computer.

10/4/04: Overture's new daily budgeting feature goes live.

10/4/04: MSN releases a second preview of their new engine, which is larger, with cache and clustering features, but nothing significantly better or different than its competitors.

10/1/04: About a year after "Florida," the algorithm change that shook up Google rankings just in time for the holidays, people are noticing increased spidering from Google, indicating that the powerful engine is updating its database. See November 2004 for an update.
