Search Engine Reports
May, 2005 5/30/05: Boston Business Journal reports that Google is considering Boston as one of four possible locations for a new Googleplex. 5/27/05: Yahoo releases demo version of new feature called Mindset, meant to help users sort and re-rank results based on whether they are commercial or informational. 5/26/05: Ask Jeeves adds Focus feature to help users expand or refine their searches more effectively; updates its signature offering by rewriting its algorithm to supply answers to queries posed as questions with data from the entire Web, rather than a few editorially approved online sources. 5/23/05: Microsoft announces upcoming release of MSN Virtual Earth, similar to Google's integration of Keyhole satellite images into Google Maps and Local search, recently (and incidentally) renamed Google Earth. 5/20/05: Google releases new personalization feature, like My Yahoo and My MSN, that allows the user to group and view commonly-used services - email, weather, news - on one page. 5/17/05: Amazon releases a new beta version of their A9 search engine. 5/17/05: With the debut of its new site targeting feature, Google joins Blowfish and Mirago (see March 2005), smaller pay-per-clicks that allow advertisers to block ad delivery by IP address, reducing fraudulent clicks and other low-converting traffic. Also releases Adsense for Feeds in beta. 5/16/05: MSN releases Desktop Search from beta. New version allows greater control over indexing and provides a preview pane similar to, but slower than, the one you get with Yahoo Desktop search. 5/11/05: Google buys Dodgeball, a sort of mobile Friendster. Opens up the (sort of creepy) possibility of targeting ads by one's physical location throughout the day. 5/11/05: Yahoo v. Findwhat, first mentioned in August 2004, ends in a mistrial after a four-day deliberation. May end in a settlement like the one protecting Google Adwords. 5/11/05: Fathom Online releases April Keyword Price Index showing cost of paid search increasing to an average of $1.95/click, up 11% from March.
