Search Engine Reports
February, 2006 2/27/06: AskJeeves becomes Ask, dropping the butler from its logo, adding some features, and absorbing Teoma for use as its own search engine. 2/24/06: Yahoo announces intention to prevent advertisers from bidding on competitors' trademark terms. This change is slated to go live 3/1/06. 2/24/06: Google adds payment option to Google Base, so you can easily pay for whatever you buy through its classifieds. 2/15/06: Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft report to a U.S. House subcommittee to defend their actions in China: Last year, MSN made it impossible to search the Chinese version of their engine for "democracy" and "freedom"; last month, Google agreed to censor search results on Google China; and Yahoo helped the Chinese government find dissidents who had criticized the government online. 2/15/06: MSN beta tests their new contextual advertising program, which will replace the one run by Yahoo in June. 2/13/06: Google Adwords begins testing Click to Call, a new feature that allows Google to place a call on your behalf to the advertiser of your choice, so you can connect with them without dialing your phone or incurring any long distance charges. 2/8/06: Google introduces a feature to SiteMaps that allows webmasters to find out how Googlebot is interacting with their robots.txt files, which determine whether and how the bot accesses your site. 2/4/06: Google bans a big car company after indexing a number of keyword-laden doorway pages, only replacing the site when they got rid of those pages a few days later. This indicates that Google may be serious about enforcing the rules for everyone. It remains to be seen whether small sites will get such a repaid turnaround. 2/1/06: Some say that Google's new data centers are already online. The new technology comes along with a new algorithm, intended to increase relevancy. 2/1/06: AOL announces its intention to launch its own pay-per-click program. Currently, they display Google Adwords. 2/1/06: Ask Jeeves replaces the image search previously provided by Picsearch with its own engine. As you search, it offers search terms deemed to be relevant to your search, so that you can easily expand or narrow your search.
