Search Engine Reports
August, 2007 Thanks to Google's new Site Authentication program, AdSense ads relevant to the content of a password-protected site can now be displayed there. Yahoo rolls out SmartAds, an Adsense competitor, which analyzes individual user data to serve up more-relevant ads. The ads served are chosen based on recent user searches, and customized to appeal to the user's demographic. Those who don't mind an invasion of their privacy may appreciate the convenience of such targeted marketing. Microsoft finally makes a dent in the market share of search, probably due to their new Live Search Club, which essentially pays people to play with their search engine. By logging on, and playing the game, users earn tickets they can cash in on software, hardware, and other prizes. Live Search now recognizes a reference to an XML sitemap in a robots.txt file. No need to submit it, autodiscovery will do the work for you. Soon, Adwords ads on Digg.com will be replaced with those from Microsoft, which made deals with two other ad networks. Privacy advocates will appreciate AskEraser, a new feature at Ask.com. Enabling it allows the user to specify that Ask delete their search history right away. Soon, Ask will put in effect a new policy on search history retention: After 18 months, personally-identifiable data (such as IP addresses) will be separated from search history.
Google plans to set in place a similar policy, though the retention period
will be 24 months, not 18.
