Search Engine Reports

June, 2008
Yahoo rejects Microsoft's offer to buy the company at $33/share, insisting on $37/share. Some shareholders have rebelled. Meanwhile, Yahoo seeks other means of partnering with Microsoft without selling out completely.

Microsoft is now willing to pay people to use its search engine. It's called Live Search Cashback. This is how it works: Sites pay Microsoft on a cost-per-acquisition (CPA) basis to advertise in Live Search Cashback. Microsoft passes that on to users in the form of a cash rebate. Spot-testing revealed rebates anywhere from 10% to 22%. But it can take up to 60 days to get the rebate.

Now, when you conduct a search at Yahoo, a new feature called SearchScan reviews the resulting websites and prints a warning across the top of the search results page if any of the sites might deliver a virus, spyware, or spam to its visitors. Hovering over the warning brings up a box that gives site owners the opportunity to contest the claim.

Google Adwords expands their Automatic Matching feature, a perverse little mechanism that targets keywords it deems "related" to those on your list, just to help you spend every last penny of your daily budget. At least you can opt out of the program!

There's better news for Google Adsense publishers. Now they can use third party software to monitor their ads.

Now available: demographic data on the viewers of your latest YouTube video.

By clicking the "More" button in Google Maps, you'll be able to view photos from Panoramio, videos from YouTube, and/or information from Wikipedia about your destination. Users may expect more to come, as Google Maps has opened its API interface to allow more integration with data from third-party websites.

Google introduces a still somewhat buggy early version of Google Friend Connect, a service that provides webmasters with snippets of code that allow them to add social networking features like message posting, reviews, photo galleries, etc., to their sites. Google Friend Connect will also include gadgets designed by OpenSocial programmers.
