Advanced Web Site Marketing
When evaluating web site marketing companies, you will
probably have a few questions, such as: "Okay, I have some traffic, but no
one's buying. Why?" If you're running a large, database-driven web site,
you may wonder if its architecture is hindering your ability to position
well in search engines, and how to change that.
How can I increase my
conversion rate?
For starters, your site should be attractive and easy to navigate. At
each step in the shopping process, it should respond to user concerns.
For example: Your privacy statement should be clearly written, easily
found, and based on fair policies. Same goes for a security statement,
which explains how you secure credit card numbers and other personal
information. Objective assessments of your trustworthiness help inspire
trust in your visitors. You might consider applying for a privacy and/or
a reliability seal from the Better Business Bureau, and displaying the
seal from whatever company secures the transmission of data on your
server. The list goes on!
I run a large, database-driven website. We do not have enough
positioning in the search engines. How can I improve it?
Database-driven websites sometimes do not position well because
their architecture is less "open" to search engines than simple HTML.
Google, for instance, sometimes avoids websites that are database driven
because crawling such a site could consume the website's resources
inordinately (as well as Google's). Some people say that file extensions
matter, and that search engines rank pages ending in .htm or .html
higher because they are easier to "read." It is also possible that the
website does not contain enough keywords that people actually use to
search for your products. Sometimes site owners have a slightly
different idea about how to describe their product than the people who
are actually looking for it. To get traffic from search engines, you
must have a well-researched list of keywords, that you know users
actually use - frequently - to search for your products; those keywords
must be embedded in your site at the density and frequency needed to
inform a search engine that your page is "about" that key phrase; and
the page must be accessible to search engines. This may require
configuring your server to make your website look static, rather than
dynamic, to search engines. There is much debate about what is really
needed to help database driven websites position well, but I am in favor
of taking all reasonable, cost-effective measures. Otherwise, you may
end with perfect knowledge of what works best for your website, but
traffic, and, ultimately, dollars have been sacrificed for that
knowledge.
